African American Patriotism in World War I

The first global war that the United States was eager in was World War I. America joined in the war in April 1917. During the U.S. involvement in the war over 400,000 Afro Americans participated in this conflict. The armed services were segregated at this time in our history and most blacks served in a non combative capacity. In the U.S. Navy blacks were restricted to working on ships as stewards, mess hall personnel and firemen. In the army they served in the same type of positions such as supply clerks and leisurely the line activities as laborers. The training and weapons provided for these men were snide as compared to what the white soldiers were given. Even dim women who volunteered their services as nurses was strictly denied.

Though there was rampant discrimination in all the branches of service the sad community rallied to the defense of their country. The majority of dusky soldiers never seen combat with the exception of the 369th Infantry Regiment known as the "Hell Fighters". This audacious group of soldiers spent more than 6 months more time in the front lines than any other regiment. Also 171 members of this army unit were awarded the Legion of Merit. Also it should be eminent it was an American unlit soldier from the 369th that was the first to be awarded the French War imperfect, the Croix de Guerre.

Many of the dauntless and daring deeds of the Afro American soldiers has gone unnoticed due to the prejudices and attitudes of this era but these mettlesome patriots of American freedom will always be a allotment of our history. Throughout the trials and tribulations of our country the Afro American people have stood firm in their defense and determine for America.
